Afghanistan: the people
It's been dominating the news for the last few days: the Taliban are in control of Afghanistan after the US decided to pull out troops. They predicted it would take 90 days for the Taliban to conquer Afghanistan, but with little resistance, the country has fallen to the extremist group in just 10 days.
9/11 happened a few months before I was born, so my generation doesn't remember the Taliban rule the first time round. We've heard how bad it was before, but now it’s happening right in front of us.
The priority here should be the people. There is a whole country that has suddenly been turned upside down, with their people now living in terror. The UK and US should be doing everything they can to get people out of there. I saw the footage of people climbing the evacuation plane in Kabul: it was upsetting to see how desperate these people were, how they wanted to leave so badly.
“This has become politicised and controversial, especially in the UK, with the Brexit referendum.”
Of course, this opens up a big can of worms for the West: refugees. This has become politicised and controversial, especially in the UK, with the Brexit referendum. Refugees are no different to us, except their home country has become unbearable to live in. We should be accepting as many as we can.
As of now, the Taliban has now set a deadline of 31st August, prohibiting citizens from leaving after then. They have also been carrying out executions. The group previously stated they were more liberal compared to 20 years ago, but actions like these indicate they operate in the same way. This rule will no doubt panic many of the Afghan citizens, and news has just come in stating that the G7 and Boris Johnson have agreed a framework in order to communicate/work with the Taliban on international matters. Johnson says the Taliban needs to ensure safe passage of Afghan citizens beyond the deadline.
“…our focus should be on the people, the millions of lives that have been endangered because of a terrorist group running a country.”
Afghanistan is a delicate political situation, and world leaders are working on how to cooperate or form some sort of working relationship with the new regime. But I think our focus should be on the people, the millions of lives that have been endangered because of a terrorist group running a country.
“…the whole point of politics is to serve the people.”
The Afghan people are the ones who need us most. The West should be thinking about how many refugees we can take in, and not thinking about ending the evacuation scheme. I don’t have knowledge in navigating international politics and diplomacy in regards to terror groups, but the whole point of politics is to serve the people. That’s what we should be doing now.
