US Election: 5th Nov 2024

It's US Election Day today. For Little I, that's 4 years of the blog. For the world, it's the difference between a former prosecutor and a criminal taking office in arguably the most powerful country.

It's the Democrats' Harris vs the Republicans' Trump, after Biden stepped down due to public pressure over his health concerns. Harris as presidential nominee is breaking records as a woman of Black and Indian descent. Trump is former President after holding office in 2016.

Predictions?

The polls? It is TIGHT. Harris and Trump are neck and neck; there is no clear winner at all. It is completely unknown based on polling who is going to win. The campaigns have been going at full pace, bringing in celebrities to sway voters, as well as promise different policies to appeal to different groups of the American electorate. Despite all of this, there is no clear answer at all, making the election even more fascinating. Harris is campaigning to support abortion and lower food and housing costs. Trump wishes to seal the border and lower taxes. Both have policies that are controversial - it remains to be seen who turns up to vote.

The Facts?

The winner needs 270 electoral college votes out of the total 538 up for grabs. There are seven swing states:

  • Nevada - 6

  • Wisconsin - 10

  • Arizona - 11

  • Michigan - 15

  • Georgia - 16

  • North Carolina - 16

  • Pennsylvania - 19

Looking at the US Election 2020, Pennsylvania, Arizona, and Georgia were key players then too. It may help to cross-reference with historical state voting patterns - I'll be posting more about this in the early hours as results start to come in.

The Feelings?

It is worth mentioning that as someone observing this election closely, I am committed to tracking the state declarations and facts and nerdy things that matter to the election because they will affect not only the next four years but the future. The economy is already in a bad way - this election will change our trajectory. It is not enough to think the impact is only on America. Equally, politics is increasingly overwhelming and it is is ok to switch off and want to ignore it completely. For me, I cannot just stay passive in my involvement - I want to inform people in any way I can, break it down, and give a different angle of what is happening.

That said, I can't believe it has come down to these two candidates - where a criminal is allowed to stand for office. Forget party politics, wings, spectrum, ALL OF IT - this should not be acceptable for any political party in America. It frustrates me that this is even a close race at all - I am not saying UK politics is perfect by any means but this is another level entirely.

Stay Tuned?

Nevertheless, I'll be up providing updates for you all. In the meantime, the resources for state abbreviations are below in the other articles to read. You can catch up on the controversies last time by viewing the previous articles and dramas in 2020.

Buckle up - it's a long night ahead. And if you read this in the morning, I hope you wake up to a world that has hope in office.
